Play Time: Rainbow Treasure

Toddlers love searching games and this one, suitable for children as young as 18 months old also teaches them the names of colors, objects and counting.

To start the game, say to the child, ‘Shall we go on a treasure hunt?’. Give the child a bag in which to collect things in.

Where the child is still quite small show the child an object that is a particular colour and tell him that we need to find things of this color first. Go around the house together to find these objects moving through all the colors together, in turn.

If the child already knows and can name colors, instead, to start the game, ask the child ‘ What color should we look for first?’.

Whenever an item is found compare the color of the items with the known item or items. Discuss each item as they are found, asking for example, ‘Is this the same colour as these other items?’, or ‘ The red lorry is the same as this red t-shirt, isn’t it?’

At the end of the game count together how many different colored objects were found and how many of each colour were found. You can now add some extra fun giving your toddler some ‘treasure’ to match the number of items or colours found. For example seven crayons or six corn flakes, etc.
