Interview Tips for Au pairs: Be on Time

If you know anything about parenting, you will know that time management plays a huge role in  a parent and child’s life. Generally there is a time for everything. A time to get up,  a time to get ready, a time to go to school, a time to fetch the kids, times to attend extra murals, do homework, have dinner, run a bath and get to bed, the list is endless. So you can imagine how being late for an interview looks to a parent. If you run late for your first interview, all the parents are thinking about is that if you could run late for the first meeting with them, how often would you run late for their children? Visions of their child standing alone at the school gate will likely flash before their eyes in monochrome settings. They may even end the interview before its begun. Not a situation anyone likes to think of their child experiencing.

If you are selected for an interview, its a good idea to check the address of the client on your preferred map app the day before at the time you will have the interview the next day. This will give you an idea of what to expect from traffic, plan accordingly for the next day to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before the start time. You could go even further and drive the route to ensure you know where you are going and where to park. Even if you have to wait to see the client when you get there, being a little early will add to the impression that you are the sort of person who is organised, trustworthy and that you understand the importance of time keeping for the sake of the client and their children. The parents vision will now look something like seeing you waiting in the car for school to end and their child being the first to leave and happily arriving at their extra murals on time. In the case of full time roles, often parents are also relying on you to arrive on time so that they can leave for work. Basically whatever the role, if it has anything to do with taking care of someone’s children, make sure you are always on time. Plan ahead not just for interview but going forward into your new job once you have it.
