Interview Tips for Au pairs: How to Dress

So you have been selected for an interview for an au pair role but don’t know how to dress? Yes, we know its a little confusing. When interviewing for an au pair or nanny position it can be a little tougher to decide what to wear than interviewing for a corporate role. Being an au pair means being involved in the families life on a day to day basis, it means being able to play, get around, it’s for lack of a better term a ‘practical’ job.

You want to appear professional, yet you also need to show parents that you are someone they can trust to fulfill your role as a child care professional. With this in mind you want to also appear comfortable and ensure that the parents also feel comfortable. A good starting point is to not wear anything too revealing, uncomfortable high heels for example. Ask yourself before you leave, if you needed to, if for example the parents introduced you to their children at the interview, could you comfortably interact with them? Parents might be inclined to think that you don’t fully grasp the physical requirements of the job and discount your application on this basis alone. A  modest smart casual look which gives you freedom to move around creates the best impression.
