Basic Conditions of Employment Act: A Guide to Family Responsibility Leave

Full time employees are entitled to three days paid family responsibility leave per year, on request, when the employee’s child is born or sick, or in the event of the death of the employee’s spouse or life partner, or the employee’s parent, adoptive parent, grandparent, child, adopted child, grandchild or sibling.

Family responsibility leave expires at the end of the annual cycle. Employers may require reasonable proof of the birth, illness or death for which a worker requests leave.

Number of Leave Days: Full time workers may take 5 days of paid family responsibility leave during each annual leave cycle (12 month periods from date of employment).
