First Aid Tip: What is Circulation?

Circulation is when the heart pumps blood via blood vessels to supply each and every cell in our bodies with oxygen using a system of arteries and veins. Arteries are the blood vessels that pump oxygenated blood from the heart to various cells, veins transport deoxygenated blood back to the heart.

The heart is a fist sized muscle located in the centre of the chest at an angle to the left. It has 4 chambers, 2 atria and 2 ventricles. These are linked via valves, which allow blood to be pumped in one direction only. Should the heart malfunction, blood is not distributed adequately, or the heart stop working the patient will die due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.
