Last week my family and I attended the most amazing little gathering in Cape Town. A few friends got together in a park on a sunny, and to be honest rather muddy, 18 degree day with the goal of changing a child’s life. We literally put a smile on a child’s face for the rest of his/her life.
How? A friend of mine came up with the beautiful idea. We had a get together, as we do from time to time in one of Cape Town’s public parks. Everyone rocked up with something fun to do or contribute, picnic baskets of food, kids, dogs, puppies, slack line walkers, hoola hoopers, portable sound system, music, poi practicing and of course, smiles. What made it exceptional was the fact that everyone who rocked up put R 100 in a box. Just R 100 each. We raised R 7000.00, which we then donated to the Smile Foundation. Knowing that one of the main reasons we were there that day was to literally put a smile of someone’s face, made us appreciate our own all the more. Everyone present was proud to be part of such a spontaneous social fund-raiser.
The Smile Foundation assists children mainly from rural areas throughout South Africa where children who have these conditions are often ostracised for their birth defects. The foundation provides surgeries to children who have cleft lip, cleft palate, facial paralysis or Moebius Syndrome, ear deformities, nose deformities, burns, facial growths and craniofacial conditions. Never having the ability to ever close your mouth leads to chronic illnesses, deafness, and a range of other debilitating symptoms.
Each surgery has a base menial cost (even with surgeons donating their time) of R 5 500 or more. While it may not seem like much, to a family with nothing, it could be an impossible amount to raise in a lifetime.
