To check the vital signs of an infant we use the same sequence of checks as those used to assess an adult
- Consciousness: talk to the infant, touch the infant or as a last resort pinch the child behind the knee.
- Airways: Clear the mouth, do not tilt the head, instead pull the jaw up, leaving the child’s head in a straight position.
- Breathing: Listen for breathing while keeping the jaw up.
- Circulation: Place your finger on the soft spot of the child’s head to check the pulse.
