First aid basics: How to Check the Vital Signs of an Infant

To check the vital signs of an infant we use the same sequence of checks as those used to assess an adult

  • Consciousness: talk to the infant, touch the infant or as a last resort pinch the child behind the knee.
  • Airways: Clear the mouth, do not tilt the head, instead pull the jaw up, leaving the child’s head in a straight position.
  • Breathing: Listen for breathing while keeping the jaw up.
  • Circulation: Place your finger on the soft spot of the child’s head to check the pulse.
